A Tuesday morning shooting at Hawthorne Place Apartments in Independence left one person dead and one injured, and police continue to search for a second suspect after taking one into custody at the scene.

The shooting in the 600 block of North Peck Court was reported about 10:25 a.m., and when Independence police arrived they found two people with gunshot wounds on a grassy area between buildings. They were rushed to a hospital, where one victim was pronounced dead. The second victim’s injuries are unknown. Police said numerous shots were fired during the incident.

Police officers’ initial search for the second suspect concentrated in the area near the shooting site at the apartment complex near the Missouri 291 and U.S. 24 interchange. Many residents were allowed to drive in and out and around most areas of the complex, depending on their residence.

As of Tuesday evening police had not released any suspect or victim information.

Independence School District said nearby Randall Elementary briefly went on lockdown while police searched for the second suspect. The lockdown was lifted about 12:30 p.m.

Hawthorne resident Michelle Massey, whose apartment is on the opposite side of the complex from the shooting, said that while police are not an uncommon sight at Hawthorne, Tuesday's shooting caused a substantial number of officers to swarm the area.

"They usually don't come out like this," she said.

The shooting remains under investigation. It represents Independence’s sixth homicide this year.
