If you heard the “booms” Monday in northern Independence and Sugar Creek, law enforcement officials assure it is nothing to be scared about.

Officers conducted bomb-squad training at a LaFarge quarry in Sugar Creek, at Courtney and Kentucky roads near Missouri 291, using explosives that had been held as evidence in prior court cases, a spokesperson for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said. Besides ATF, Kansas City police bomb squad officers also took part in the training exercises.

“It was a controlled area where they already had blasting permits,” said Chris Soule, Sugar Creek Chief of Police. “It was safe – just loud.”
