Saturday marks the semi-annual National Drug Take Back Day, and area law enforcement agencies will be at numerous drop-off sites from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help people safely dispose of unused, expired or unwanted drugs – prescription and over-the-counter. Participation is free and anonymous.

Medications, including those for pets, patches, ointments, cough syrups and vitamins all will be accepted for disposal, and medications can be left in the original bottles. Needles/syringes, inhalers and thermometers will not be accepted.

Saturday’s Take Back Day will be the 14th official event under the Drug Enforcement Administration. According to the DEA, more than 4,200 law enforcement agencies took part in the April event, with nearly 5,500 collection sites across the nation accumulating more than 900,000 pounds (450 tons) of drugs that were incinerated.

In the 13 previous events, the DEA and local agencies have taken in more than 8.1 million pounds of drugs – more than 4,050 tons.
