A midday shooting Thursday outside a Blue Springs restaurant left one man dead.
The shooting happened shortly after 11 a.m. outside the Bethlehem Cafe between Northwest Woods Chapel Road and Northwest South Outer Road. The victim, who was shot next to his vehicle parked at the restaurant, was rushed to a hospital but died there.
The male suspect tried to flee on foot and carjack another vehicle at the nearby KFC/Taco Bell, police said, but was unsuccessful and was soon taken into custody. Shots were fired during that attempted carjacking, but nobody was injured.
The victim's name has not been released, pending family notification.
Police are trying to determine the shooter's motive and if the victim and shooter knew each other.
“A lot of our information is still sketchy,” Lt. John Kingsolver said.
Restaurant patrons who had been inside the Bethlehem Cafe when the shooting happened waited more than two hours while police processed the scene before they were able to leave.
The shooting marks the second homicide this year in Blue Springs.
