A suspected drunken driver crashed into an Independence Police car early evening, but the IPD officer escaped with a minor injury, police said.

The officer was responding to a call and westbound on U.S. 24 at 6:14 p.m. with emergency equipment on, police said, when it yielded at a red light at Sterling Road and began to drive through the intersection at the Sugar Creek border. That's when a vehicle southbound on Sterling crashed straight into the police car's passenger side.

The male driver of the second vehicle was taken into custody for DUI, police said, while the police car was totaled.
