Cindy Midgorden, music teacher at Santa Fe Trail Elementary, directs nearly 1,000 fourth graders of the Independence School District on Thursday morning at the Community of Christ Auditorium. The students were rehearsing for Sunday's 32nd-annual Mayor's Christmas Concert, presented by Centerpoint Medical Center and benefitting Community Services League. Also performing will be the Young MAIster Singers from Music Arts Institute, the Spirit of Independence Band and William Chrisman High School Concert Choir. Kansas City radio icon Dick Wilson will be master of ceremonies. Admission is free, with donations accepted during the concert.

Also this weekend, the Mayor's Holiday Lighting is 6 p.m. Friday at Hiram Young Park at the corner of Noland Road and Lexington Avenue, and the Mayor's Christmas Carnival is 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at the Sermon Center. [Mike Genet/The Examiner]
