A Kansas City man on Wednesday pleaded guilty to smuggling contraband, including cell phones, into the Jackson County Detention Center earlier this year.

Marion Lorenzo Byers, 36, faces up to five years in federal prison. He pleaded guilty to violating the Travel Act by facilitating the promotion of an unlawful activity, specifically acceding to corruption.

Byers was among five people charged last summer in connection smuggling banned items – cell phones and chargers, cigarettes, Xanax – into the jail in May and June. Two were jail guards.

Byers admitted that he delivered contraband to someone who got it to a guard, who was to deliver it to an inmate.
