Independence Police have identified the victim of Tuesday's fatal two-car collision on Interstate 70 as 16-year-old Lauren Courtney of Blue Springs.

The accident happened about 1:18 p.m., Tuesday, on westbound I-70 just west of Noland. According to police, a Toyota driven by Courtney and a Mercedes collided during lane change. While the Mercedes came to a controlled stop on the right shoulder, the Toyota slid off the roadway to the right and overturned. Courtney, who police believe was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected. She was rushed to a hospital but died from her injuries.

Courtney had no passengers in the Toyota, and nobody in the Mercedes was injured. The crash remains under investigation, though police said the Mercedes had damage to the front of the driver's side.
