1 Time is running out – The historic sites in Independence will only be open for Christmas through Saturday. Now's your chance to tour the Vaile Mansion, 1500 N. Liberty St. (325-7430); Bingham-Waggoner Estate, 313 W. Pacific Ave. (461-3491); and the 1859 Jail & Marshal's Home Museum, 217 N. Main St. (461-1897). All three sites are open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. through Saturday, and cost $6 for adults; $5 for seniors; $3 for ages 6-16. The 1827 Log Courthouse, is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Friday, and by appointment only after 2 p.m., 107 W. Kansas Ave. (325-7890).

2 Slithering Snakes – Slither in and discover the wonderful world of Missouri’s snakes from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center, 1401 N.W. Park Road, Blue Springs. These legless, scaly reptiles are often misunderstood, but are beneficial to us and the environment. Snake myths will be untangled, plus you'll learn who lives around us and meet some live snakes up close. This event is open to all ages and no registration is required. For questions, call 228-3766.

3 New Year's Eve Full Moon Hikes – George Owens Nature Park is offering two hikes at 5 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The hikes will be on paved trials and are for anyone who prefers even terrain.They are also stroller and wheelchair accessible. The Nature Park is located at 1601 S. Speck Road. The hikes are free, but reservations are needed by 5 p.m. Thursday, call 325-7115.

4 New Years Eve Dance – American Legion Post 21 in Independence is holding a New Years Eve dance from 8 p.m. to midnight on Sunday, with the Reddymen Band providing the music. Seating is reserved. The $35 per person cost includes hors d'oeuvres, champagne, party favors and breakfast at midnight. Tickets are available in the club lounge. The Post is located at 16701 E. U.S. 40. 5 Zoo Year’s Eve – Ring in the new year at the Kansas City Zoo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Penguins, polar bears, and many more animals will enjoy festive enrichment items. Dance to the beats of the interactive DJ and make a noise maker before you jump in the photo booth to capture a memory. This event is included with Zoo admission. No registration required.
