Several students from Eastern Jackson County received the Voncile Bowen Huffman Scholarship at the Professional Education Scholarship and Awards Ceremony Nov. 30 at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg.

Emily Hellon, Victoria Spencer, Marissa Torres, Joshua Bass and Elizabeth Williams of Blue Springs and Deveri Harvey of Independence were recipients of the scholarships.

The Voncile Bowen Huffman Scholarships are offered through the UCM Foundation for use by UCM undergraduate students during the student teaching semester. They are made possible by Voncile Huffman, a Denver resident and UCM alumna who established the awards upon her death in 2002 with a $2 million estate gift to the UCM Foundation.

Huffman graduated from UCM in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. She taught elementary school and served as a teacher and principal in the Denver Public Schools for 38 years.

• Hellon is a 2013 graduate of Blue Springs High School. She is a student at UCM majoring in elementary education.

• Spencer, daughter of Kelly Spencer, Blue Springs, and Steve Spencer, Omaha, Neb., is a 2014 graduate of Blue Springs High School. She is a senior at UCM majoring in education.

• Torres, daughter of Jim and Becky Torres, Blue Springs, is a 2013 graduate of Blue Springs South High School. She is a senior at UCM majoring in secondary mathematics education.

• Bass, son of Lori and Jeff Bass, Blue Springs, is a 2013 graduate of Blue Springs High School. He is a senior at UCM majoring in elementary education.

• Williams, daughter of Fonda and Tim, Blue Springs, is a 2015 graduate of Blue Springs High School. She is a senior at UCM majoring in elementary education.

• Harvey, daughter of Dale Henderson, Independence, and Lana Cashmark, Lone Jack, is a 2001 graduate of Blue Springs High School. She is a senior at UCM majoring in art education.
