Independence Police are investigating a shooting early New Year's Eve that left a boy and a dog injured.

Officers were called at 2:39 a.m., Dec. 31, for shots fired into a home in the 1400 block of North Downers Place, in a northeast Independence neighborhood south of U.S. 24 and Blue Mills Road. It was unknown who fired the shots.

• In a separate case, an Independence couple's home on Norton Avenue was damaged by New Year's celebratory gunfire. The homeowners on Norton Avenue were watching New Year's Eve celebrations on TV when shots hit their house, but they were not injured.

Police responded at 12:07 a.m., Jan. 1, for shots fired and found people shooting in a nearby backyard. Officers arrested two people and recovered “numerous” firearms, police said. Charges are pending.
