A shooting Tuesday evening in the parking lot of the Independence Center mall is the city’s first homicide of 2018.

Independence Police were called at 8:32 p.m. to a shooting at the mall at the 18800 block of East 39th Street, where officers found a male victim dead in the parking lot. It is not known what led to the shooting, and police had no one in custody or suspect information available as of Tuesday evening. No further victim information has been released.

Investigators had several rows of the parking lot facing 39th Street taped off for about a half-hour before narrowing the crime scene. Employees of a neighboring fast food restaurant said an officer informed them of the shooting but there was no danger posed to the restaurant, which continued to serve customers.

The mall closed at 9 p.m., but police said because of the late hour and frigid temperatures there was not much of a crowd in the parking lot at the time of the shooting.

Police ask anyone with information about the shooting to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-8477.
