A safety upgrade is in the works for the Little Blue Trace Trail in Independence.

Jackson County legislators are set to approve applying for federal money to have the trail pass under Missouri 78 rather than crossing at street level, as is the case now. That would put bicyclists, walkers and joggers on a 10-foot wide concrete section of trail like the ones that pass under Interstate 70 and U.S. 40.

County documents do not list the project’s cost. The county is going for federal money distributed by the state, and local taxpayers would have to pick up one-fifth of the cost. If it gets the money, the work would be started in 2019.
