An Independence man driving a Preovost tour bus was killed Monday during a giant pileup on southbound Interstate 35 east of Ames, Iowa.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, 53-year-old Dana Easter was killed when the bus he was driving slammed into a line of stopped vehicles on the highway about 12:30 p.m. Monday. Traffic had stopped in the southbound lanes during a snowstorm due to another crash farther south on the highway. Easter failed to slow down and hit the rear end of a Volvo tractor trailer, the patrol reported, causing a chain-reaction crash involving four other vehicles.
According to WHOtv in Des Moines, authorities estimated about 70 vehicles were involved in multiple crashes in the highway pileup. The interstate was shut down in both directions for nearly six hours as the scene was cleared.
