A Sunday night fire severely damaged the office of the Great Western Motel in Independence, but no injuries were reported. According to city officials, units from four Independence fire stations responded at 9:34 p.m. to a report of heavy smoke coming from the motel office at U.S. 24 near Missouri 291. Smoke and fire were coming out of the building by the time firefighters arrived. By 9:50 p.m., firefighters declared the blaze under control, and it was declared out at 10:02 a.m. The office building, which is detached from the motel rooms, has been deemed dangerous, and the fire is under investigation.
