Independence Police are seeking a second person of interest in what is now a death investigation.
Police want to talk with brothers Nicholas W. Gomez, 23, and Diego Gomez, 25, regarding a fatal shooting in which the victim was found early Wednesday in a stolen vehicle in western Independence. The victim's name has not yet been released.
According to police, at 2:42 a.m., Wednesday, officers were conducting an area check on an unrelated call near 18th Street and Waubesa Avenue, a few blocks west of the Englewood Arts District, when they located a stolen vehicle from outside Independence.
The vehicle's driver tried to elude officers and the vehicle was soon found abandoned in the 1700 block of Waubesa. Two occupants had fled on foot and were not found. Inside the vehicle, officers found a third person who had suffered a gunshot wound; that victim was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Diego Gomez posted multiple times on social media that the victim shot himself and that he, Gomez, is not at fault. In response to IPD's Facebook post about his being a person of interest, Gomez wrote “I didn't shoot anybody the kid shot himself check the gunpowder residue on his hand.”
On his own Facebook page, Gomez called the victim “a cool dude, really awesome guy,” and indicated that the victim had played the lethal game of chance, Russian roulette.
Anyone with information about either Gomez's location or about the case is asked to call the TIPS hotline at 816-474-8477 or IPD tips at 816-325-7777 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
