Civic leaders have set the date for a second citywide cleanup in Independence.
It will be May 21 and this year will add the involvement of students from Fort Osage, William Chrisman, Van Horn and Truman high schools. Last year’s event drew hundreds of volunteers.
This year it comes in two parts. From 11 a.m. to 1:50 p.m., students will tackle litter at Dickinson, Fairmount, Mill Creek and Santa Fe parks.
Adult volunteers will work from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at three spots, including sections of U.S. 24 and U.S. 40.
The third, like last year, will be at Missouri 291 and Truman Road.
“It seems to be a perpetual giant trash-collection area,” said Tom Waters, the event’s chief organizer.
Organizers are looking for sponsors. Call Kris Zerr at the Chamber of Commerce, 816-252-4745, for more information.
Information on how to sign up will be released later.
