A new company has come to Grain Valley, hiring people now, looking for more and looking for a permanent location.

“We’re looking for land in Grain Valley,” said Ja’an Scofield-Meche, human resources director for Universal Services, speaking from company headquarters in Hastings, Minnesota.

The company does commercial construction for telecommunications companies, installing fiber and coaxial cables.

It’s opened in a temporary site on Broadway and has about 15 employees, and it says it’s on its way to hiring 35 to 45 total. It says those jobs start at $34,000 to $37,000 plus overtime and benefits that include health coverage and a 401(k) plan.

“We have jobs filling as we speak,” Scofield-Meche said.

The company is privately owned and has been in business for 20 years.

Up to now, it has worked in five states in the upper Midwest: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota and North Dakota. The Grain Valley operation is meant to serve as a hub to serve elsewhere in the Midwest, the company says.
