The Scouts of Blue Elk District, in cooperation with the Independence Parks and Recreation Department, were able to do a little landscaping this Saturday during the annual District “Good Turn” project, at the Memorial Building and Polly Pop Park at Truman and River streets.
City Horticulturist Charlotte Olejko and Blue Elk District Activities Chair Greg Dowell organized the project. Native plants and shrubbery were transplanted from the Memorial Building grounds, sent on Parks Department trucks, and replanted in the park on River.
The project reflects the Scouting Motto “Do a Good Turn Daily,” and the third point of the Scout Law, “a Scout is Helpful.” Service projects that help non-profit organizations are a part of every rank advancement in Scouting, and are considered a vital part of its program of character development.
