Lee's Summit police continue to seek the public's help in what they say was a road-rage homicide Saturday evening at the intersection of Missouri 291, Interstate 470 and Colbern Road.

Police say 24-year-old Cody Harter of St. Joseph was stabbed in the chest and died on the inner median of the highway. Officers had responded about 7:30 p.m. Saturday to reports of a man stumbling into traffic near where northbound M-291 merges with I-470. By the time emergency crews arrived, Harter had collapsed on the median.

Officers found Harter's truck – a 2003 maroon Chevrolet Silverado – on the shoulder of the roadway, with a large, zero-turn mower in the truck bed. Witnesses reported seeing another vehicle stopped in front of Harter's truck and Harter and a suspect arguing outside their vehicles. Police believe Harter was stabbed once during the argument, and the suspect drove away north on I-470.

Harter was a member of Missouri Air National Guard and had served overseas in the Middle East.

Police are asking anyone who has traveling along I-470/M-291 about 7:30 p.m. Saturday and anyone who might have seen the victim's vehicle northbound on M-291 from U.S. 50 to call police at 816-969-1705. Police also are interested in seeing available dashcam video footage from drivers who used M-291 from U.S. 50 and out east to Missouri 7 between 7 and 8 p.m. Saturday.
