Heavy rain early Friday caused flash flooding in some of the usual spots in the metro area, including the U.S. 24/Northern Boulevard intersection at the Independence and Sugar Creek border. The flood waters again damaged businesses on both sides of U.S. 24, and the culvert that runs under the highway toward a stream in Sugar Creek is often seen as the culprit. In a release, Sugar Creek Mayor Mike Larson said it is “most unfortunate this situation continues,” but the city maintains it is problem on private property. Sugar Creek has met with officials of the Missouri Department of Transportation and the city of Independence lately to work on a flooding remedy “for the benefit of all concerned.” Larson said the city's legal case with the business on the aforementioned private property is ongoing.
