The Missouri Department of Transportation is gearing up for a complete closure of Interstate 70 in both directions between Interstate 470 and Interstate 435 in Independence and Kansas City.
They’re urging drivers to do the same, warning that the closure will begin at 10 p.m. on Friday, June 8 for the demolition of the Pittman Road, Crysler Avenue and Phelps Road bridges. Workers expect to reopen roads by 5 a.m. on Monday, June 11.
Eastbound and westbound ramp closures for Interstate 70 will also add to traffic.
Eastbound ramp closures include: Manchester Trafficway, northbound and southbound Interstate 435, Blue Ridge Cutoff, U.S. 40, Blue Ridge Boulevard and Noland Road.
Westbound ramp closures include: northbound and southbound Interstate 470/Route 291, Lee’s Summit Road, Noland Road and U.S. 40.
Eastbound Interstate 70 will be limited to one lane from Manchester Trafficway to Blue Ridge Cutoff. Westbound Interstate 70 will be lessened to one lane before the Route 291 and Interstate 470 interchange. Southbound Route 291 will also be condensed to one lane.
Drivers can take the signed detour or another route. MODOT cautions motorists to use the zipper merge and to plan ahead.
