If you haven’t done so yet, you might want to plan your route ahead of time so you don’t have to hit the brakes on weekend plans.

The Missouri Department of Transportation is gearing up for a complete closure of Interstate 70 in both directions between Interstate 470 and Interstate 435.

Closures will begin at 10 p.m. Friday for the demolition of the Crysler Avenue and Phelps Road bridges in Independence and the Pittman Road bridge in Kansas City. Workers expect to reopen roads by 5 a.m. Monday or when the debris is cleared.

Eastbound and westbound ramp closures for Interstate 70 will also add to traffic.

Eastbound ramp closures include: Manchester Trafficway, northbound and southbound Interstate 435, Blue Ridge Cutoff, U.S. 40, Blue Ridge Boulevard and Noland Road.

Westbound ramp closures include: northbound and southbound Interstate 470/Missouri 291, Lee’s Summit Road, Noland Road and U.S. 40.

Eastbound Interstate 70 will be limited to one lane from Manchester Trafficway to Blue Ridge Cutoff. Westbound Interstate 70 will be lessened to one lane before the Interstate 470/Missouri 291 interchange. Southbound Missouri 291 will also be condensed to one lane.

Drivers can take the signed detours, but local drivers may want to take an alternate east-west route, such as U.S. 40, U.S. 24 or 39th Street.
