James Beale has been named Grain Valley's interim chief of police, following David Starbuck's retirement last week.

Beale was appointed this week by the Board of Alderman and Mayor Mike Todd. He has been in the department for 10 years – including the last 3 1/2 years as a captain – and has 34 years of law enforcement experience.

Starbuck retired after 42 years in law enforcement. He was appointed chief in January 2015 after a couple months as interim chief. Earlier, he had served 25 years with Kansas City Police, retiring in 2001, and the nine years with the National Drug Intelligence Center.
