With an excessive heat warning in effect through Saturday evening, local community centers are opening their doors to serve as cooling zones.

In Independence, the Roger T. Sermon Community Center (201 N. Dodgion Ave.) will be open 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. The Palmer Center (218A N. Pleasant St.) will be open Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Meanwhile, in Blue Springs, people can take refuge from the heat at Vesper Hall (400 N.W. Vesper St.) 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and at The Fieldhouse (425 N.E. Mock Ave.) 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

In addition to visiting a cooling center, other recommendations for beating the heat include staying hydrated, avoiding caffeine and alcohol, and wearing lightweight clothing, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen.
