Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center is offering the following activities for the month of September. The Nature Center is located at 1401 N.W. Park Road in Blue Springs. Critter Feeding Schedule: For all ages – Discover what’s for dinner at Burr Oak Woods as the captive amphibians, fish and turtles are fed at 3 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays. The snakes will be fed Sept. 28, and Oct. 12 and 26. Walk-ins welcome.
Spectacular Spiders: For all ages, 1-2:30 p.m. Sept. 1. There are more than 300 fascinating species of spiders in Missouri! They can be camouflaged, furry or even brightly colored. Join us as we creep into the eight-legged world of spiders. We will learn about them inside then head out on a trail to see who is hanging around. No registration required.
Family Fishing: For families, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Sept. 8. This is a great time of year to take your family fishing. We will teach some fishing basics, provide equipment and worms and then let you practice your new fishing skills. Kids who attend will be entered in a drawing at the end of the summer for a new fishing pole and tackle box.
Monarch Magic: For all ages, 1-3 p.m. Sept. 15. Join us for an afternoon of fun as we learn about the monarch butterfly and its magical trek to Mexico. You will also get a chance to become a citizen scientist by tagging monarchs and tracking their journey.
Wild Edibles – Pawpaws, Persimmons and More: For adults, 9-11 a.m. Sept. 18. Learn how to prepare and make delicious products from native Missouri fall fruits.
Conservation Families – Creek Walkin’: For families with children 6 and older, 6:30-8 p.m. Sept. 18. Come with us and take a walk in Burr Oak Creek to see what animals live there. Streams are a very important part of our forest ecosystem and a fun place to explore.
Little Acorns – Superhero Snakes: For ages 3 to 5 with an adult, 10-11 a.m. or 1-2 p.m. Sept. 19. Snakes are superheroes! Even without arms or legs they search out and catch prey using their super sensitive tongues. Learn what it’s like to be a snake!
Home School – Life in a Pond: 10-11:30 a.m. for ages 6-8, 9-11, 12-18 or 1-2:30 p.m. for ages 6-8, 9-11 Sept. 19. Fish, frogs and even insects call ponds home. Join us as we discover the wild communities in the Burr Oak Woods pond. We will be fishing, using nets to find macro-invertebrates and hiking to explore the watershed surrounding the pond.
Family Archery: For families with children 8 and older, 1-2:30 p.m. or 2:30-4 p.m. Sept. 22. Discover the fun of this family activity as parents and kids learn together. We will teach and practice the basics and help you perfect your stance to shoot more consistently and accurately.
Babes in the Woods – Creek Crawlin’: For babes under 36 months, 10-11 a.m. Sept. 26. Splash on down to the creek to learn about aquatic critters! We will take a short hike to Burr Oak Creek and explore this special watery world.
Introduction to Deer Hunting: For ages 11 and older; 11-15 years old must be accompanied by a participating adult, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 29. Have you thought about hunting, but just don’t know where to start? Deer hunting is a challenging, yet exciting tradition here in Missouri. Learn the basics of pursuing white-tailed deer. Topics include everything from scouting locations to hunting methods and more.
Rockin’ & Readin’ Nature Tales: For ages 2 and older, 11 a.m.-noon Sept. 29. Join us for story hour as we lead you on fantastic nature adventures! Our imaginations are the only limits. Walk-ins welcome.
