Emergency workers rescued an injured worker from a trench Monday afternoon at a house construction site in Blue Springs.

The incident happened in residential area near Eighth Street and Moreland School Road, just west of Adams Dairy Parkway, and the trench was reportedly 10 to 12 feet deep. The trench did not collapse, but the worker was injured when he was hit by a piece of construction equipment while inside the trench, apparently suffered a broken leg and could not get out, said Eddie Saffel, assistant chief with the Central Jackson County Fire Protection District.

That happened about 3:30 p.m. After shoring up the walls, emergency crews rescued the injured worker at about 6:20 p.m., hoisting him up on a stretcher by using a fire truck ladder. The worker remained alert through the whole incident, Saffel said.
