The victim of Sunday’s fatal car crash in northern Independence has been identified as 52-year-old David Huey of Independence.

The crash happened shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday at U.S. 24 and Lee's Summit Road. According to Independence Police, Huey was driving a Kia north on Lee's Summit when a westbound Ford van ran a red light and collided with the Kia, which overturned came to rest upright. Huey and his female passenger were rushed to the hospital, and he later died.

Police said it was not clear if Huey was continuing north onto Holder Road or turning left onto U.S. 24, and they don’t believe Huey was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. It is unclear if his passenger was wearing a seatbelt.

The woman driving the Ford van was taken to the hospital with “moderate” injuries, police said.
