A Monday afternoon house fire in Independence killed an elderly woman who was found inside. Firefighters carried her outside through the back and attempted CPR, but she was pronounced dead at the scene, Assistant Chief Mike Ditamore said. Her name has not yet been released. The fire was reported at 1:35 p.m, at the 15000 block of East South Avenue, just west of Lee's Summit Road, and crews from the four stations arrived. The fire was deemed under control at 1:50 p.m, and by then the woman had been found and rushed outside. No one else was inside the house, though one neighbor said she saw a dog run out of the house when firefighters arrived. The house has a wheelchair ramp leading to the front door. Ditamore said there was no early indications of smoke alarms in the house, but it's possible one could have been buried under a collapsed ceiling. The state fire marshal is investigating, and firefighters initially found no obvious cause. [Mike Genet/The Examiner]
