Alan Fenwick was hired by the Blue Springs Police Department in August 2007 as a detention service officer. Prior to coming to work for the city, he owned his own business for 20 years. After selling his business in 2006, Alan decided to use his training in law enforcement from the University of Central Missouri and was hired by the Police Department.
As a DSO, Alan has the responsibility for prisoners brought into the Blue Springs holding facility.
His position requires patience in working with people under the stress of having been arrested, diligence in ensuring that all paperwork is correct, careful oversight of prisoner needs and a focus on safety.
The DSO position has many additional responsibilities, and Alan is a “go-to guy” for assistance from all bureaus.
DSOs assist with the scheduling and relays of vehicles for maintenance, taking police reports from citizens who come to police headquarters, fingerprinting of prisoners and for citizen permits, and for preparing inmates for court hearings.
As his supervisor, I describe Alan this way: He is an employee well respected by peers, and someone who thinks ahead to be the most productive he can be each day.
Alan has a calm but firm demeanor when working with prisoners who are belligerent and ensures the safety of city employees, the arrested person and other prisoners.
Family is important to Alan, and becoming a grandpa early in 2009 has made him very proud. Even during tough times, Alan is a loyal Chiefs fan. Alan enjoys the outdoors, especially when fishing or deer hunting. He also enjoys maintaining his own vegetable and flower gardens. Alan enjoys preparing beef brisket, but his secret barbecue sauce recipe is not for sale.
In Alan’s words, “Blue Springs has given me this opportunity, and I have enjoyed everyone around me at the Police Department. In the future I hope that by being here I can make a positive difference and continue to learn more about the field of law enforcement.”
We know that he will make a difference, and we are happy to recognize Alan as our employee of the month.
