An Independence woman was shot in the chest by an apparent stray bullet early Saturday as she drove on 63rd Street Trafficway near Interstate 435.

The 40-year-old woman had exited from southbound I-435 onto 63rd Street about 1:40 a.m., turning right onto 63rd Street when the bullet came through her windshield, according to media reports.

The woman felt sharp pain, looked down and saw “her guts hanging out of her chest,” according to police reports. She then pulled over on 63rd and Zoo Drive and called for help.

Occupants of two vehicles on 63rd Street were exchanging gunfire and a stray bullet hit the victim, police said.
