The Blue Springs Police Department is proud to announce that Detective Matt McLaughlin has been selected as our most recent “Employee of The Month.” This award is presented to an employee for consistent excellent performance. This is Matt’s second EOM award, as he previously received this award in November, 2009.
Matt graduated from Blue Springs High School and went on to attend UMKC where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 2004. He later graduated from the Western Missouri Regional Police Academy and was hired as a Deputy Sheriff with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department in August, 2005. His assignments included road patrol, courthouse security and an assignment to the Fugitive Division.
In August, 2007 Matt joined the Blue Springs Police Department as a Uniformed Patrol Officer. In November 2010 Matt received the assignment as Professional Standards Detective, which includes responsibility for the investigation of citizen complaints, internal reviews and conducting hiring background investigations to ensure that we hire only the best applicants. These tasks are crucial components of the police department to enhance the quality and performance for our community.
Matt also has to be ready for many other daily duties that are thrown his direction, often with short notice. In Matt’s words, “I feel that dealing with citizen complaints has taught how to better listen, become a buffer for those who are upset, and calm down citizens or fellow employees who need to be heard.” It is Matt’s goal to help our employees to have a positive opinion of Internal Affairs concerns through fairness and respect to everyone involved. As his sergeant, I believe that he’s getting this accomplished in a very positive manner.
Matt is a member of the BSPD Crisis Intervention Team specializing in assisting people dealing with mental illness and crisis. His professionalism in this area awarded him the CIT Officer of The year by the NAMI organization. He was also nominated for the BSPD Officer of The Year in 2011. Matt volunteers as a member of the BSPD Accreditation Team, assisting in the process that helped us attain full accreditation in July, 2012.
Matt said his long term goal is to continue to grow as a police officer and eventually be promoted at BSPD. If you would ask anyone at the police department they would tell you that Matt is a great police officer and an outstanding person. His outgoing personality is contagious to others who feel comfortable approaching him with anything on their mind. In his personal life, Matt is married and has three young sons.
