The Kansas City man who was arrested in connection with the sex crimes case in Bates City has been released and no charges will be filed against him, police say.
Larry Kidd, 55, Kansas City, was arrested without incident in Jackson County last week on suspicion of raping a child less than 12 years old.
Identified as an associate of the Mohler family, Kidd was taken to a jail in neighboring Lafayette County Jail where five other defendants also are being held, according to other media sources.
Kidd expressed to other news outlets his confusion as to why he was picked up in the first place.
Police said no charges would be filed against Kidd, who was home on his front porch three days after being tied to the ongoing investigation.
He said in other published accounts that he has never met any members of the Mohler family, accused of sexually molesting children on their Missouri farm.
Kidd said it’s possible they took him into custody because he knows one of the alleged victims.
Kidd was released less than 24 hours after police took him into custody.
The five family men, charged with several felonies including forcible sodomy, rape with a child younger than 12 and use of a child in a sexual performance, are facing additional charges of rape after a third victim was identified.
The men are identified as Burrell Edward Mohler Sr., 77, of Independence and his four sons, Burrell Edward Mohler Jr., 53, of Independence; Jared Leroy Mohler, 48, of Columbia; Roland Neil Mohler, 47, of Bates City; and David A. Mohler, 52, of Lamoni, Iowa.
Darrel Wayne Mohler, 72, of Silver Springs, Fla., is also charged in the case. He is the brother of Burrell Edward Mohler Sr.
He is expected to be extradited.
The five men are expected to appear in court today in Lafayette County.
