An Independence man and a Blue Springs man are among a dozen people indicted on federal charges of fraudulently receiving federal unemployment benefits when they were actually employed.
The 24-count indictment was made public Wednesday as the defendants were arrested and made their first court appearances.
Each of the 12 is charged with one count of theft of government property and one count of bank fraud. Authorities say each of the 12 acted independently of the others, getting jobless benefits transferred to debit cards issued by Central Bank in Jefferson City.
The U.S. attorney’s office for the Western District of Missouri says Ramon A. Matos, 43, of Independence, got $19,603 in benefits he wasn’t entitled to from August 2009 to August 2011. That includes $11,153 in state benefits, $8,275 in extended federal benefits and $175 in additional federal compensation.
Also, authorities say Ryan S. Thrasher, 34, of Blue Springs, got $15,728 in such benefits from November 2009 to October 2010 – $6,236 in state benefits, $8,592 in extended federal benefits and $900 in additional federal benefits.
Eight of the other 10 people live in Kansas City. One is a former Kansas City resident living in Hawaii, and one lives in Sedalia.
