An Independence man drowned Sunday afternoon near Tunas, Mo., after he attempted to cross a creek that had overflowed because of rainfall.

William Willis, 75, died on his farm in Dallas County near Tunas after he and two passengers were crossing a field in a pickup truck. According to a Missouri State Water Patrol report, the vehicle attempted to cross over a creek, and the vehicle was swept away. The passengers were able to escape through the back glass of the vehicle, the report states, but the victim remained trapped.
