Three people are safe following an apparent carjacking in Independence on Sunday night.

Police said the three people were driving on East 23rd Street at about 8:21 p.m. Sunday when they approached the Harvard Street intersection.

When they stopped at the light, a Hispanic man in his early 20s and with short black hair, wearing a white, sleeveless shirt and blue shorts, got in the rear of the car.

“He told them he had a knife and planned to use it if they didn’t get out, which they did,” said Tom Gentry, police spokesperson.

They complied. No one was injured.

Anyone with information should call police at 474-TIPS.
