A Blue Springs teenager has been charged in the attempted robbery of an ice cream truck driver earlier this week.
Isiah G. Etienne, 17, of Blue Springs, was charged with the Class B felony Friday by the Jackson County Prosecutor’s office.
Blue Springs police were dispatched to the area of Southwest 29th and Southwest Jackson streets in Blue Springs Tuesday. They had reports of an ice cream truck driver being robbed and shot.
According to court documents, police found the Independence man in the cul-de-sac at the end of Southwest 29th Street. He was bleeding from his nose and left ear. He stated that he had been flagged down by two males, who approached the passenger side of the van to order ice cream.
A third male, later identified as Etienne, appeared on the driver’s side, and opened it. Etienne allegedly demanded money and pointed a gun at the driver. The truck driver then grabbed the money box and threw it in the back of the van. That is when Etienne allegedly starting shooting, so the ice cream truck driver moved to the back of the van.
Court documents said the three suspects then headed north, so the ice cream truck driver started to follow them. However, he stopped when he realized he was bleeding.
Police apprehended two of the suspects near U.S. 40 and Cemetery Road. The third, who was the driver, turned himself in at the Blue Springs Police Department shortly after. Etienne, the fourth suspect, was apprehended at school the next day.
According to the other three suspects, it was Etienne’s idea to rob the ice cream truck. Court documents said he reportedly told his friends: “Hey, you guys wanted to get some money, let’s rob the ice cream truck.”
The judge issued a $25,000 cash only bond for Etienne. The other juveniles were released pending investigation.
