The life without parole sentence for a Kansas City man in the death of an Independence woman was affirmed by a judge on Tuesday.
A jury in August convicted Todd Fonville, 20, of first-degree murder in the death of Debeney Kreiling in April 2011. The jury recommended the life sentence, and Judge W. Brent Powell added 19 years for a second murder, along with a $400 fine when he affirmed the sentence on Tuesday.
In all, Fonville was found guilty of shooting Kreiling and Jose Morales and then striking a 3-year-old child with his car as he fled the scene of a car that had been set ablaze on Cliff Drive in Kansas City with the bodies of Kreiling and Morales inside. The child was injured but survived. The fine was in connection with striking the child.
Powell sentenced Fonville to 15 years for second-degree murder in Morales’ death and eight years for armed criminal action. Those sentences are to be served consecutive to the life sentence, along with the four-year sentence for leaving the scene.
Another man, Miguel Apodaca, will serve 20 years for each murder, concurrently. He had pleaded guilty.
Debeney C. Kreiling was 22 when she was killed.
The victims’ badly burned bodies were found in a car at Cliff Drive and Gladstone Boulevard in Kansas City in mid-April 2011. According to court documents, Fonville and a second man, Miguel Apodaca robbed Kreiling and Morales in the basement of a home in the 5800 block of Anderson in Kansas City. They then shot both victims, put their bodies in the car, drove it to Cliff Drive and lit it afire.
