Two Kingsville, Mo., teenagers stole a truck and drove it to Blue Springs Monday before they were arrested.

The two girls – 14 and 13 years old – reportedly stole the truck keys from the purse of a senior at Kingsville High School, which is about an hour to the southeast. It was unclear why the girls came to Blue Springs, Troy Pharr, spokesperson for police, said Tuesday.

When they arrived in the city at about 2 p.m., they began driving on Missouri 7. At the Moreland School Road intersection, the 14-year-old driver struck another car that was pulling onto Missouri 7, heading south, from Moreland School Road.

“They didn’t want to stick around after that,” Pharr said, adding that an off-duty Independence police officer witnessed the hit and run.

Leaving the scene, the girls drove west on Liggett Road. The off-duty officer contacted police and informed them of what he saw and soon Blue Springs police and Jackson County sheriff deputies pursued them, eventually stopping them at the Lake Jacomo dam.

They were taken into custody without incident and later released to parents.

Pharr said the 14-year-old was issued three traffic tickets. Additional charges may be forthcoming after information is presented to the county prosecutor. The 13-year-old was not issued any tickets, and charges will likely not be filed against her.
