A 29-year-old Independence burglary suspect is in the custody of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office pending possible charges.

According to Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Ronda Montgomery, at about 9:45 a.m. Thursday, a sheriff’s deputy received a call about a motor vehicle accident near 18th Street and Jennings in unincorporated Jackson County, just northeast of Missouri 291 and U.S. 24.

After arriving to the area, the deputy spoke to witnesses who observed an occupant of the vehicle leave the scene carrying a black bag. The man was described as a possibly Hispanic male in his 20s wearing black cargo-type shorts, a black T-shirt and a black baseball cap.

After learning the suspect’s direction of travel, the deputy immediately attempted to locate the man. While doing so, he found several tool boxes, jewelry boxes and other items near the scene.

The items were recovered, a perimeter was set up, and Kansas City Police Department helicopter was requested.
Meanwhile, Independence police were dispatched to a nearby burglary, where the suspect matched the description of the suspect involved in the vehicle accident.

Shortly after, the Sheriff’s Office took the suspect into custody near Lexington and Hartford streets. He initially refused verbal commands and was removed from under a deck with the assistance of a Sheriff's Office K-9.

He was treated for a dog bite at a local hospital and was released. He is currently in the Jackson County Detention Center pending charges.

The truck involved in the accident was later determined to be stolen, and several of the items recovered belonged to the victim of the stolen auto. The origination of the other items is still under investigation.

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Sharp said he attributes the arrest to neighbors in the area who kept the deputies up to date on the suspect’s location, as well as the meticulous investigation on behalf of the officers involved and the assistance of the Independence and Kansas City police departments.
