Jackson County prosecutors Wednesday announced felony charges against an Independence man they accused of robbing his blind uncle.
Allen R. Bennett, 41, was charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary. On Aug. 12, Bennett allegedly knocked on the blind man’s door in the 1600 block of Fremont Avenue in east Kansas City. Bennett is the step-nephew of the victim, according to authorities.
“Bogey, it’s me, Allen,” Bennett said according to court records.
The 64-year-old victim, known by his friends and family as “Bogey,” refused to open the door. Bennett then kicked in the door.
“Give me the money,” Bennett said, according to the documents.
Bennett allegedly smashed the man’s head about eight to nine times with an unknown object and then rifled through the man’s pockets. Bennett allegedly removed the victim’s credit cards, medication and $40 to $50 cash. Bennett searched the bedroom, too, according to the report.
“The defendant took advantage of the victim’s disability … knowing the victim could not defend himself due to his disability,” according to Velda Cook, a spokeswoman for the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.
The blind man was taken to North Kansas City Hospital. He got four staples in the back of his head and had several abrasions to the face, neck, elbows and hands.
Bennett denied involvement in the crime during police questioning.
An arrest warrant has been issued for Bennett. He had not been arrested as of Wednesday afternoon.
A judge set bond at $250,000.
