A prayer vigil open to the general public will take place from 7 to 9 tonight at the Community of Christ Temple sanctuary in Independence. Linda Booth, Community of Christ’s director of communications, said the vigil is in connection with the sex crime allegations surrounding the Mohler family.
Additional charges are expected to be filed in the case of five family men, who have been charged with felonies including forcible sodomy, rape with a child younger than 12 and use of a child in a sexual performance. A sixth man, who now resides in Florida, was charged late last week in the case. The alleged abuse took place from 1988 to 1995, according to one victim, who is now 26 years old.
“It’s just to have time for all those who are suffering and are healing,” Booth said. “There are a lot of people upset, concerned and angry – and all of the above and more.”
Three of the accused men are lay ministers with the Community of Christ but are not in positions of leadership or are involved with youth, according to statements the Community of Christ made last week.
