Independence police on Tuesday arrested an off-duty paramedic for allegedly shoving a man, sending him to the hospital.
Jeffrey Francis, 37, was charged with one count of simple assault. The charge is a city municipal violation.
The following account is taken from the police report.
At 6:12 p.m. Tuesday, police went to the Walgreens parking lot at 3915 S. Noland Road in regard to an assault.
Francis told police several people were standing in the parking lot, blocking parking spaces and preventing him from pulling in. He pulled into a parking space very close to the standing people in order to make a point.
As he got out of the car, a woman yelled at him, claiming he nearly hit her. He replied that she shouldn’t be standing in the middle of the parking lot. He allegedly called her a bad name.
The woman’s husband chimed in. He told Francis not to speak to her in that manner.
Francis said he walked away from the scene and toward the store. The husband allegedly said: “that’s all you can do is walk away, fat (expletive).”
Those words sent Francis into a rage and he went off.
Francis admitted he shoved the husband, who fell backward. This caused his head to slam on the front bumper of Francis’s vehicle.
Police noticed a small dent on the right side of the chrome bumper.
The husband told police Francis called his wife a vulgar name as she chastised him for allegedly hitting her as Francis pulled in.
The husband denied calling Francis a fat (expletive).
Paramedics treated the husband at the scene. He seemed confused when asked basic questions. Paramedics took him to Centerpoint Medical Center to get checked out.
Francis told police what he did was wrong.
