A man is in Independence police custody after a two-hour standoff in western Independence Wednesday.
About 2 p.m., construction workers spotted the man trying to start a pickup truck they were using near Truman Road and Vermont Avenue. As the man struggled to start the vehicle, the workers ran over and confronted him. He jumped out, armed with a knife, and “began waving it around,” said police spokesman Tom Gentry.
The man ran, with the construction workers chasing him. He got to the 11400 block of Simpson Avenue and ran into the basement of a house.
Gentry said the construction workers called for police help. Nearby officers responded and then called for the Special Response Team. The occupants of the house ran out, and Gentry was uncertain if they knew the intruder in their basement.
He said the SRT used robots and a police dog to search for the man, and when they didn’t find him in the basement, officers entered the house and began working their way upstairs, searching.
Gentry said they found the man hiding in a cabinet above a shower and took him into custody about 4 p.m.
