A Kansas City man is headed to federal prison for 10 years in connection with an incident that ended with police using a Taser to subdue him at the IHOP near Sterling Avenue and Interstate 70.
Thomas D. Clegg, 29, of Kansas City, was sentenced Wednesday, according to the office of the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Missouri. Earlier, Clegg had pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. Ten years is the maximum sentence.
The incident happened May 4 of last year. A Yellow Cab had been carjacked and the driver’s cell phone taken. Kansas City police pinged the cell phone, which led them to the IHOP at 4149 Sterling Ave., near Lowe’s and Walmart at Blue Ridge Crossing. They found the cab and went inside the restaurant. Officers asked Clegg to step out of the booth he was in, but he tried to push past them and get away, and they used a Taser to stop him.
Clegg is a felon, with two prior convictions on possession of a controlled substance and prior convictions for unlawful use of a weapon, trafficking drugs, voluntary manslaughter, firing a weapon from a motor vehicle causing injury or death, armed criminal action and assault. Under federal law, felons cannot possess firearms or ammunition. Police found Clegg to be carrying a loaded 9mm handgun. Police also recovered the cell phone.
