From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, players for the Grain Valley soccer teams will be holding a Sonic Day at the Grain Valley Sonic on Main Street south of I-70.
GV guys and gals will be participating in this fundraising event. All donations will go directly to scholarships and equipment to be used by both the girls and boys teams.
Not all of the players will be able to physically participate in this fundraiser. Senior and captain Danny Brooks of the boys’ soccer team is one of the varsity players sustaining an injury this season.
During a home game Brooks’ clavicle bone was broken in four places and protruding through the skin; after a collision with a player from the other team, causing the 18-year-old to miss the rest of the season.
Though he’s very disappointed he will not be able to play with teammates on the field, Brooks will continue to attend games, events, and help support the teams morale with his witty attitude and positive outlook not only towards the game but life in general.
He did get to experience several glorious moments, including scoring the first two goals of the first game of the season. Being the first ever soccer team that has played for Grain Valley High School added to the excitement.
You can support GVHS athletics by attending these fundraising events, including Sonic Day Saturday, and Oct. 2 the entire community is invited to watch the annual Powder Puff game starring GVHS senior class of 2010 defending their title against the junior class of 2011. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased in advance by Mrs. Chambers at GVHS or at the game for more information call 816 847-0005.
Another successful Grain Valley Fair Daze
Excitement, music and laughter filled the air throughout Grain Valley recently. Grain Valley Fair Daze was considered to be a truly successful event for many in the area. Brad’s Burger Barn had customers calling in orders for delivery even before the fair began.
The beer garden sold a variety of cold drinks, including popular brands of pop and water bottles.
Proceeds from burgers and beer went directly to the Grain Valley Chamber of Commerce, who has experienced the devastation of the economy just like most. Chamber Administrative Assistant Jennie Morgan was pleased with the volunteers and support from the community. “Excellent” is the word she used to described the event.
As always, unique food and craft booths lined up in hopes of selling their special items. The curly fries and honey ice cream were two of the annual favorites and, of course, funnel cakes.
The weather was perfect for the GV Fair Daze parade Saturday morning. The theme for this year was “Think Green.” Floats were constructed with recycled materials.
Entertainment was abundant; many area musicians played for a captive audience. Bands included the Big Mama Band, the Outlaw Junkies, and a new favorite, the Grain Valley High School Jazz Band. The Jazz Band is new this year and played an amazing concert and will be scheduling more community events in the future.
Kustom Cruzers Collision Center in Grain Valley provided basic entertainment by offering the chance to take a sledge hammer to a junk car; which seemed to be very popular with citizens of all ages. The bashing could be heard throughout the weekend. If you are in need of collision repair give them a call at 816-847-2311.

Taste of the World
