What are the three most important things people should do for emergency preparedness in their homes? Have a plan of action. They should know how to communicate with their families. ... They should have food and other supplies for 72 hours.
Was last week’s conference a success? I thought it was great. I thought it was very successful. It gave us a base we can build on with area churches.
Are good resources available to help businesses plan for emergencies? Absolutely. Go to preparemetrokc.org, ready.gov or the Web sites of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. You can find continuity-of-operations plans. It’s also a good idea to have employees take CERT – community emergency response team – training. Call 816-220-6518 for an upcoming class in Independence.
What does your typical day at the office look like? In the office by 7:30, doing city work during the work day. Evenings spent working with volunteers. The day ends about 9 or 10 o’clock. It’s a lot of hours each week, but I love what I do.
We know about tornadoes, ice storms and the flu. What scenario that doesn’t get talked about much really worries you? What really worries me is that people don’t know how to shelter in place. There is not a day that goes by in the United States that a shelter-in-place order is not given. The danger could for example come from a derailed train car full of a dangerous chemical that is spilled, forcing many people to stay indoors for an extended period of time.
