Lee’s Summit North hit the .500 mark in Ty Kohl’s second season after going 3-7 in 2009. But now Kohl might be facing his biggest challenge since heading the Broncos as he’s faced with the challenge of replacing a 28-player senior class.
| 1. I’m not sure many teams have had as much turnover from last year as you guys. How’s the group looked so far? |
Well, we lost 28 seniors. We have 15 seniors this year. We’re just very inexperienced. But I really like our team. I really like our senior leadership. Even though it’s small, I really like what our seniors are doing. But we’re going to be inexperienced. No excuses, but that’s the facts. |
| 2. Were there any positions in particular where when last year ended you said, “Man, that kid’s going to be tough to replace”? |
Yeah, about 20 of them. But I really like our sophomore group athletically. Like I said, our senior class is really doing a good job of leading and trying to pull these young guys up. So I think we just need to make sure we’re progressing every day. I always say you either get better or get worse, and we need to make sure that we’re constantly getting better. |
| 3. With so many changes, do you adjust the system at all or stick with the same game plan and sort of fit the pieces together that way? |
I’m truly a big believer that you have to change to your personnel. If you’ve got more skill guys than you do linemen, then you’ve got to use those skill guys. You have a bunch of linemen, then you’ve got to use those linemen and pound the ball. And so we feel like we have more skill guys right now, so we want to try to use them and try to get them the ball as much as we possibly can. |
| 4. You’re teaching an almost entirely new core of players, but does it help that a lot of these guys have played their entire high school careers for you help with the reloading process? |
Yes, no question about it. Having the same staff in place has helped tremendously. The staff here has worked tremendously hard. They’ve done everything we’ve asked them to do. They don’t get a lot of credit, and they deserve it for sure. |
| 5. Is this the worst conference in the state to have to try to rebuild in? I’m not sure there are too many teams in the state that play a tougher schedule than you guys. |
No question about it. It’s the toughest conference in the state, and we’ve got one of the toughest schedules in the state. But we wouldn’t want it any other way. This is how we want it to be. To be the best, you have to beat the best. So we wouldn’t want to be in any other conference. It’s a dogfight every game, but that’s part of being in Class 6. |
