It’s been almost three years since you told me “we’re going for a ride in the country.” I was so excited to go for a ride in the car.
We went into the country for quite a while then you stopped and let me out. The open field looked like so much fun that I jumped out and ran all around. I chased butterflies, grasshoppers and squirrels. It was a warm sunny fall day and I loved feeling free.
But then when I went back to the edge of the road, your car wasn’t there.
I sat down and waited. You didn’t come back for me that day. Every time a car came by, I’d run out to see if it was you coming to get me.
Night came and it was very scary. I saw large green eyes in the distances and heard noises that I’d never heard before. I sure miss my warm home, bed and dinner. I wonder why you hadn’t come back for me.
Another day went and you still didn’t come for me. I’m sure getting hungry. I really don’t like the taste of grasshoppers and berries from the trees. Cars come by the field where you left me, but when I go to the edge of the road, I see it’s not you. Did you forget where you dropped me?
Two women called me to come to them, but I don’t know them and I’m afraid of them. Today is the third day, and you still haven’t come for me. I cross the road to see if you are over there.
Then there was a loud bang and I felt pain all over. I fell to the ground in awful pain. They told me I had a 21 bird shot in my 12-pound body. Why did you leave me alone in the country?
