Norman Atwell, an Independence native, answered The Examiner’s call for Korean War photos. Atwell served with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Unit in Korean from Sept. 1950 to May 92.
“Cold — I’m warm-blooded, and I was never so cold in my life,” Atwell said of his experience in southeast Asia.
Atwell served on the front lines before being transferred to Masan, Korea, where he and other soldiers created a headquarters battalion. The commanding officer was William Brown, and base camp was an old rice plantation.
Atwell, who plays clarinet and saxophone, formed a seven-piece band that performed seven nights a week.
